As the federal government shutdown continues to weigh on families in the Washington DC–Maryland–Virginia region, grocery chain Giant Food is stepping up with a meaningful gesture of support. In partnership with the D.C. United Foundation and three local chefs, Giant Food announced it will give away 1,000 holiday meal kits to furloughed federal workers and recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
What the Meal Kit Includes
Each holiday kit features:
A turkey breast
A Giant Food gift card
Fresh produce
A selection of non-perishable side items
A chef-created spice blend and accompanying signature recipes from the three partnering local chefs
Eligible recipients are invited to reserve their kit starting Friday, Nov. 7, with pickup scheduled for Nov. 25 at the Giant Food store located at 1400 17th Street NW in Washington, DC. Reserve your kit here: https://form.typeform.com/to/pBWf9JIc?typeform-source=www.google.com
Going Beyond the 1,000 Kits
The initiative doesn’t stop with the 1,000 kits. Giant Food is also donating more than 19,000 Thanksgiving staples to local food banks and community partners across the DMV. The breakdown includes:
7,800 whole turkeys
7,500 turkey breasts
4,000 pumpkin pies

If you’d like to support the effort, Giant Food is also running its “Lend a Hand for Hunger” campaign. Here are a couple of ways to get involved:
