New Faces, Core Memories—with the One Who Makes All Things New

As I reflect on this year's Vacation Bible School, my heart is full. What a joy this journey has been! After the first night, all I could say to the PBC VBS team was, “Look at God!” You could truly feel the Lord moving and working throughout the evening. From the moment participants began arriving at 700 I Street NE until the closing announcements, we were in the midst of another unforgettable PBC VBS experience.
As our Senior Pastor, Rev. Joel Limerick, reminded us, VBS is done for us, by us. We invest in creating our own theme, décor, curriculum, materials, menu, and classes. It is a time when generations, ministries, and new volunteers come together to carry forward a tradition that belongs to Pilgrim while creating new memories. That is a gift we will continue to cherish.
One of the highlights this year was welcoming so many new faces. Approximately 28% of those who joined us were guests, new members, or first-time volunteers. It was a beautiful reminder that even as we carry forward the VBS tradition, God is always doing something new.
Night two was just as meaningful. The children learned about the Armor of God as Sis. Carole King demonstrated what it means to prepare for spiritual battle. Sis. Janet Thomas incorporated sensory activities that helped children better understand who God is and just how much He loves them.
Our adults and seniors spent extra time in class with Rev. M.E. Penman, while Michelle Roulette, our Dance Ministry Leader, surprised everyone with a well timed movement break. Pastor Joel and Dr. Emily Limerick also stopped by to share with the class.
The final night was a wonderful celebration. We ended with activities for every age group. The children, youth, and teens participated in a scavenger treasure hunt, while our adults and seniors completed a project that will preserve memories of VBS 2026 for years to come.
Of course, we couldn't end Vacation Bible School without gathering together for a meal. Church Administrator Jacqueline Speller helped bring us all together with a family-style cookout before we concluded with Water Fun Night on the playground for our youngest participants. It was a memorable ending to another year of learning, fellowship, and fun.
As we close another VBS, I hope you can see what the treasure has been all about. Yes, we searched for treasure all week—but the greatest treasure has always been Jesus Christ, our risen Savior. He is the One worth seeking, the One who has always been near, and the greatest gift we could ever receive.
Thank you to every volunteer, clergy, teacher, ministry, leader, parent, participant, new member, and supporter who helped make this year's VBS another unforgettable Pilgrim experience! We look forward to continuing this tradition for generations to come.
